In honor of its 100th anniversary, the Wenatchee Downtown Kiwanis Club is awarding $500 to a different local nonprofit organization each month this year.
The Wenatchee Downtown Kiwanis Club is part of a global organization of chapters that focus on supporting families and young people in their communities.
“Our motto is ‘serve the children of the world,’” said Tom Irvin, board president of the Wenatchee Downtown Kiwanis Club. “When we do fundraisers or anything like that, most of our money goes to children’s organizations.”
So far, the club has awarded $4,000 through its “year of giving.” The August recipient was Chelan Douglas CASA, which equips court-appointed volunteers to advocate for children who have faced abuse and neglect, according to its website.
“It’s been wonderful,” Irvin said.
Each month, a different member of the club selects three organizations to be in the running. The winner is chosen through a community vote. Past months have typically seen 300 to 350 votes, according to Irvin.
September’s nominees are St. Vincent de Paul’s Food Bank, Chelan-Douglas Action Council and Chelan-Douglas County Volunteer Attorney Services. Voting closes at the end of the month.
Irvin said the donations are funded through club fundraisers. One of the biggest is the Apple Blossom Pancake Breakfast, which has been held for 65 years.
“We serve anywhere from 2,500 to 3,000 people on that morning, so it’s a big fundraiser for us,” Irvin said.
The Wenatchee Downtown Kiwanis Club meets every Tuesday at noon in the southeast corner conference room at Pybus Public Market, 3 N. Worthen St., Wenatchee. Meetings are open to the public.
“We’re always trying to recruit new members, especially young people,” Irvin said.
Wenatchee Downtown Kiwanis Club donated $500 to the Chelan-Douglas CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) in April 2026.
Chelan Douglas CASA equips and empowers court-appointed volunteers to advocate for the best interests of children and youth who have endured abuse or neglect so that they will have safety, permanency, and wellbeing.
Chelan Douglas CASA envisions a world where every child thrives in a safe and loving home free from abuse and neglect.

What is a Kiwanian?
Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time.
Kiwanis Name
The name "Kiwanis" means "we trade" or "we share our talents.." It was coined from an American Indian expression, Nunc Kee-wanis.
At Kiwanis Clubs, we see it happen everyday!
Kiwanis' motto is "Serving the Children of the World." The original motto was "We Trade". A new motto of "We Build" was adopted during the 1920 International Convention and represented Kiwanis for more than 80 years.
The six permanent Objectives of Kiwanis International were approved by Kiwanis club delegates at the 1924 Convention in Denver, Colorado.
· To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life
· To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships
· To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business, and professional standards
· To develop, by precept and example a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship
· To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, render altruistic service, and to build better communities
· To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill
Kiwanis International (/kɪˈwɑːnɪs/ ki-WAH-nis) is an international service club founded in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan. It is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States, and is found in more than 80 nations and geographic areas. In 1987, the organization began to accept women as members.
